Austin bought Starkey Labs, introducing the first Starkey custom in-the-ear hearing aid the following year. Types of Hearing Aids

Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)

This type of hearing aid has largely replaced in-the-ear (ITE) models. A smaller speaker located directly in your ear canal enables sound to travel a shorter distance from the speaker through your ear canal and eardrum. This results in clearer and more intact sound, while the larger distance between the receiver and microphone leads to less feedback. Appropriate for mild to severe hearing loss.

Completely-in-Canal (CIC)

These small and discreet hearing aids are inserted in your ear canal, making it difficult for other people to see you’re wearing a device. CIC hearing aids are typically equipped with a small handle or cord that aids in removal. Appropriate for mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

This traditional device consists of a small, hard-plastic case worn behind the ear connected to a customized plastic ear mold that fits inside your outer ear. Appropriate for moderate to severe hearing loss.

In-the-Canal (ITC)

This type of hearing aid fits in the ear canal with a smaller portion visible in your outer ear. Appropriate for moderate to mildly severe hearing loss.

In-the-Ear (ITE)

These hearing aids are encased in custom-made hard plastic cases that sit in your outer ear. They are relatively small and discreet, but large enough to accommodate advanced features such as ear-to-ear communication. Appropriate for moderate to severe hearing loss.

(Nearly) Invisible in the Canal (IIC)

This type of hearing aid must be positioned by a hearing care professional deeper in your ear canal near the eardrum. Although Starkey calls this device invisible, another company offers the only 100% invisible hearing aid.

Notable Features

The Thrive virtual assistant, built on the intelligence of Google Assistant, enables users to activate features by double-tapping their hearing aid. Only the user hears the assistant’s voice, at a level tuned to their specific hearing loss. Microphones in the hearing aid enable voice-to-text transcription and translation into 27 languages.

Utilizing 3-D sensors, Starkey released the first hearing aid that can detect when a user falls. Its built-in auto alert feature automatically sends an alert message to as many as three pre-selected friends or family members when you fall.

The body health feature is tracked by the sensors in the hearing aid, while AI algorithms track brain health. The brain health dashboard records how often hearing aids are worn, engagement while wearing the hearing aid, and active listening, which assesses use in different types of environments.

Wireless mics

The Remote Microphone + makes it easy to stream from a variety of audio sources and enables two hearing aid models to connect to Amazon Alexa. The Mini Remote Microphone makes it easy to have one-on-one conversations in noisy environments and can be used as a TV streamer when placed near the sound source.
